Hi, I have 3 original oil paintings done by Lorne K. Smith. I would like to have them appraised. How would I go about doing this.

Lorne kidd Smith was a Canadian artist born in 1880. Paste this information into your title bar. It will take you to ARTNET.COM. http://www.artnet.com/artist/720218/lorne-kidd-smith.html They charge $30 for 10 searches in one month and report on recent sales at auction houses around the world. You may also take the works to a reputable art gallery that offers these services. There is usually a fee for doing this. ADMIN

I think it would be a good idea to add an extra option for artists such as myself who paint primarily nudes and people, to call ourselves 'figurative', along with the other options such as portraits, landscape, etc.

Our database is being reworked to accommodate such searches, so it is important to mention them in your description. It is near impossible to list all the arts disciplines, but this next go round will reflect the areas of concern. ADMIN

I was quite offended when a friend of mine, was considering joining, showed me that on your site you have our territory abbreviated as Yuk ...this is unacceptable. 'Yuk' is definitely not an adjective ever used to describe the amazing talent here. Please correct this offence right away. The proper abbr is YK !!! There really is no excuse for the rest of this country being so ignorant of the entire northern 1/3 of it's land! We will all be very pleased to see this fixed right away. Sincerely; Professional Yukon Artists

To All the Professional Yukon Artists, We are sorry for this oversight in abbreviating the Yukon Territory under the flag in our index incorrectly. Artists in Canada is truly a proactive site intent on representing all Canadian artists equally whether by race or religion or art discipline. Ignorance is a very strong word to use to assume all of Canada knows nothing of the north or for a typo that has existed for over 7 years. By the way you are the only person that thought it important enough to bring it to our attention. Thank you for this and as you can see the change was made as soon as I received your email this evening. I wish we had more artists in the Yukon sign up - it is free to do so if they have a website and yes, we do have websites available for those with out one. To date we only have 8 artists listed from the Yukon - not very many for a Territory as talented and large as the one you live in. I encourage you to spread the word to your artist friends. Thanks again for keeping our site as professional as it is for the world to see. It helps all of us. Regards, Paul Constable Director

I was given a painting by an artist named L (Levente?) Kovac or Kovacs. It was done in 1964 and looks like it came out of a commercial studio in Montreal. The design has a number and it is dated by hand, with the studio name stamped on the back. I can't find anything on the artist. Can you help? Thanks!

I found an oil painting and I only can see two names I think one name is Knight and under it is Peirs? and in front of Knight is ddway. I can't find the artist. Can you help me? Thank you. Mac looking for Knight.

The one great thing about found artwork, that is unidentifiable, is that you enjoy it. You may have to take the painting to a professional. Admin

I just bought an original George Jenkins sighned. I was wondering if you had more information about this incredible canadian artist.

1920-2003 George Jenkins was born in Wilkie Saskatchewan and grew up on his father's farm near Lloydminster. Following three years in the army during W.W.II, he worked in the logging camps of Vancouver Island. It was there that he began to paint. He did not begin to paint full-time, however, until he made a visit back to Saskatchewan and was struck by the images of his childhood. Thus inspired he embarked on a career in art. He concentrated on documenting the prairie landscape and the architecture of elevators, and abandoned farm buildings. Although depicting his subjects in a high realist style, his monochromatic palette appropriately gave the viewer an impression of a memory or looking at a faded photograph. He inspired a school of prairie painting that continues to this day. Admin

Where can I find information about a Canadian painter named Murray Mcheynne Stewart? I have been given one of his oil paintings and just wanted to know more about him.

MURRAY MCCHEYNE STEWART Born in Toronto, December 12th, 1919. Died peacefully in his 86th year November 27th, 2006 at Casa Verde Health Centre, Toronto. Loving husband of Muriel (Anderson) for 60 years. Murray was a lifelong artist and was noted for his interpretation of the Canadian landscape in both oil paint and water colours. His love of painting took him from coast to coast in Canada and throughout Europe and the U.S.A., his work is prized and admired in many private and corporate collections in Canada and abroad. He was a long time member of the Arts and Letters Club, an ardent bowler with the Willowdale Lawn Bowling Club and loved the seniors snooker club at Edithvale Community Centre. He passed away from Alzheimers. ADMIN

I am looking for information on the artist Walter W. Pranke. In an attic I found pen and ink drawings of Old Montreal - First Series. There should be 4 drawings but only found two. They are beautiful and would like info to attach with them.

Born in the former Czechoslovakia 1925. Studied at Dresden Art Academy in Hanover, Germany (1947). Came to Canada in 1955, first to Montreal where he opened a studio before settling in Ottawa in 1981. Worked in oil and ink. He painted mainly in the Laurentians, Gatineau and the Ottawa Valley. Had eight solo shows and was interviewed frequently on radio and television. He also painted several large murals for government buildings in Texas and Oregon. In 1967 he produced three portfolios of his pen and ink drawings of Old Montreal and Quebec City for his Centennial project. Several of his paintings were reproduced as Christmas cards for Canadian charities. I believe he currently lives in Ottawa's west end. I have a painting that I just was wondering about. It's on a Amco Bilt frame and underneath the name is 'Glendale' printed on it...The painting isn't signed but it is an abstract glass/swirl type of thing...I don't know anything about it but I was just wondering if anyone could help me figure out anything about its past...Thanks.

Sorry, there just isn't enough information to determine the artist. Possibly Glendale is where it originated, so use Google to search the cities and art galleries. There are a number of Glendales in the States so, if you knew where the work originated that would narrow your search. Good luck. ADMIN

Hi My daughter gave me a small statue some years ago and I am looking for some info on the artist Ben Henry six nations ont.can '95. Which is carved on the base many thanks janet

Ben Henry, Tay Hon Die Ta (Piercing Heaven), was born on January 18, 1950 into the Onondaga Tribe, a member of the Deer Clan. He is a traditionalist which means that he is not a member of the band, observes the old teachings and does not accept government funding. He moved to St. Catherines from Oshweken at age seven. Ben moved back to Oshweken in his early teens, worked as a steel worker on high rises and eventually established his own construction company. He started wood carving at seventeen and changed to steatite (commonly refered to as soapstone) in 1982. He is self-taught and his works have been featured in shows since 1984. I wanted to get more information on the the artist Bill Epp (Saskatchewan), and the sculptures/art work that he has done. Are there any books/publications that contain more information?

Funny you should ask. Bill Epp's retrospective show will be held at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford Saskatchewan on Saturday, December 2, 2006. Over 50 of his sculptures - from small busts to lifesize bronzes will be on display, many have never been seen by the public. In addition to auction houses, there are independent appraisers (like me!) who offer services to determine the value of art and antiques. Independent appraisers do not have a vested interest in the value of the items because we are not interested in selling them, thus, our services may be considered more objective in determing value. Thanks for providing a forum for discussion!

Thanks Shawne. If you have a website please feel free to enter it into our RESOURCES section.ADMIN.

An elderly lady from Cuba that I took care of for many years passed away five years ago. (she would be in her 90's now) Her family gave me six oil paintings (two large and four small) - The artist signatures include Brauer, Robert Phillip(e) not sure about the e, and three signatures that I cannot verify. The majority have the Amco / Bilt symbol on the back and a few read, 'made in Belgium' I guess my question is - do they have value and how can I determine the value? Thank you in advance. Eva

Robert Philipp, American painter and etcher was born February 2nd, 1895 in New York City. He studied at the Art Students' League with Frank Vincent DuMond and George Bridgman from 1910 to 1914. He also studied at the National Academy of Design with Volk and Maynard from 1914 to 1917. He died in 1981. I would imagine his work is worth a bit money. An Auction house would be to appraise the work. www.askart.com could also help you as they have numerous pieces listed. ADMIN

looking for any works by Maud Lewis or everett lewis. cartercare@eastlink.ca

Maud Lewis was born in Yarmouth County, and endured many hardships in her early life. As a teenager, she started to experience deformities of her face and hands as a result of a childhood disease. Maud married Everett Lewis, and together they lived in a small one room house with sleeping loft, without benefit of electricity or plumbing. Although she suffered from physical handicaps, she made hand drawn Christmas cards and later, small brightly coloured paintings, which she sold to help overcome their poverty. She also painted birds, flowers and butterflies on various parts of the tiny house in which they lived, and many articles within the house. Examples of Maud's art can be found in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which has reconstructed her house and installed it in the gallery as part of a permanent Maud Lewis exhibit. Her work can also be found in the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. She is the subject of a book, 'The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis', and a stage play has been written about her life. She is also the subject of two National Film Board of Canada documentaries, 'Maud Lewis - A World Without Shadows' (1997), and 'The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis' (1998). In later years, her husband Everett also began to paint.

Very informative site and looks like the ideal set up for the proverbial starving Artist, so much so that in the beginning of 2006 I might partake of your services.

For many artists money is always tight and this can hold back a great talent, that is why we offer very reasonable web site space with a professional look. When you are ready send us an email. ADMIN

why do you not have an entry for walter pranke?

Mr. Pranke or his representative galleries have not submitted his site to our database, for whatever reason. We don't have the staff to search for artists who aren't listed in our database and enter them. ADMIN

I was looking for information regarding Walter Pranke as well. I know you answered previous requests and said: 'This is possibly the most requested artist we have had to date. Type the artists name into www.google.ca - It will lead you to numerous sites listing this artist.' I have followed your suggestion and there were no helpful 'hits' (in fact that is how I found you....and I'm glad I did. GREAT site). In addition I searched the resource sites listed on artSleuth's site without luck. Anyone have suggestions?

The C.H.I.N. database has some information and provides sources for further research: CHIN Database - Walter Pranke (click this link to view)

Information from an e-mail (Thank you)

Where can I obtain information on Artist, Leonard C. Lane?

He was best known for coastal view, marine, village and landscape paintings. Born in Bristol, England around 1910, Leonard C Lane emigrated to Canada with his family when he was sixteen. He served four years in the Royal Canadian Navy during War World II. He exhibited realistic marine paintings extensively throughout the United States. He died in a plane crash. Try searching www.google.com for more info. Admin

I just bought my first painting and am interested in finding out more about the artist so your site came up while I did a search. I don't see their name mentioned. I don't know if the artist is Canadian or American. It is signed Winkler. There is writing on the back that says it was a gift to someone for the birth of their child. It is marked 1973 paid $225. How would I go about finding some info about this painter? I have done a search but come up with nothing that shows their work. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There are a number of Winklers out there. Try searching www.google.ca - There are a number of artists listed on a few sites, as I don't have any of the paintings imagery details, you will have to do the sleuthing. Admin

The best site for learning about Canadian artists and their inspiring works. The content is really wonderful...Thank you for providing such an invaluable resource. Thank you very much,

I often hear comments that my work does not look like the same person did them.....I work in all mediums, experiment, everything from realism to abstract...I guess that sorts of explains it..ha! Any thoughts as to why? Can you refer me to an any articles on this subject? This is the greatest web site.

You may want to ask the advise of Robert Genn through his Twice Weekly Newsletter. www.painterskeys.com can be found easily on our Web Site Rankings to your right, under RESOURCE 30 Days. Search through his archived letters by year; there may be a letter written on your situation already. I suggest signing up for his newsletter, they can inspire even the most seasoned artist. ADMIN

I was so happy to see May Moore's art work on display on your great web site. I have many of her paintings and visit her gallery out in Gardner Creek, just outside of Saint John, 15 minutes past the airport, on a regular basis. Her colors and subjects are so cheery and bright and they touch me each time I view them. Keep up the great work May and everyone should check her out in Saint John.

2005-01-10 Arn: aji_@_shaw.ca Saskatoon,

Very good resource center. How about having a page for current art news of the world. Who's hot, what's new, auctions; especially those of Canadian content/interest. Maybe you should 'affiliate' with NYArtsmagazine who will probably welcome a Canadian partner. Another idea/possibility is to have an auction page specifically for Can.artists as in E-bay where anyone can submit, set a minimum bid and wait. Emphasis could be on 'art-community' rather than business with Artists handle their own sales&shipping and a small donation to you/whoever(charity?).

Anyone who has a website knows how difficult it is to get feedback or suggestions for the improvement of their site. It's a rare and valuable commodity. We thank you for taking the time to make some excellent suggestions.

We have avoided posting news articles since they stale-date so quickly and there are so many good sources on the internet. Our DAILY ART NEWS section contains a list of some of these (banner near the bottom of our ARTICLES section in the middle of our home page). With the number of affiliate programs available, we will be looking at our options more closely in the coming year.

We do plan to have a gallery of artwork for sale by the artist, after we have completed some other improvements to our site.

Our priority project right now is to reorganise our database to make it easier to find artists and art resources in our database. When this has been completed (hopefully by spring), we will be able to look at 'other' improvements to our site.
