Artists In Canada Workshop, Saskatoon

Posted: October 18, 2006
September 30th was a great Saturday for this workshop hosted by Artists In Canada for 32 High Schools students. These students were chosen for this one-day Mentorship Workshop by 7 professional artists who also helped mentor in 4 classifications - Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Photography. The students were chosen from the Prairieland Exhibition's 2006 annual art show. All the great signage and awards were printed by Spectrum Imaging. Group The Artists In Canada Mentorship Award was presented to young aspiring artists between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age who showed enthusiasm and potential as artists. This award is to help young people meet fellow artists, build confidence, explore their art options and provide positive guidance in a one-day workshop environment. Drawing Students tried out many new ideas using products supplied by Colours Art and Framing in Saskatoon as well as Tree Pottery, Unisource Papers, Phase II Photography and we can't forget the great lunch hosted by 2nd Avenue Grill. The highlight of the workshop was the students own show at the rouge gallery in downtown Saskatoon, October 2 - 7, 2006. After a quick talk by the mentor, John Perret, the photography students paired up and headed out to shoot images that were of interest. After a short critique and lunch they downloaded their images and reviewed their work on screen. The digital images were then ready to be taken to Phase II photography, who supplied prints for each student. Photography Painting students listened to a quick review of colour theory by mentors Rolf Krohn and Paul Constable. The drawing students were mentored by Josslyn Meyeres and Ann Donald who warmed up the artists with a number of charcoal drawings, then they headed outside on this plus 22C. Painting After the mentors Jim McKay and Kevin Quinlan orientated the young sculptors with the they proceeded to do a portrait session in clay for the morning, then did a tin foil and plaster bandage motif in the afternoon. Sculpture It definitely was a day well spent, with a room full of talent and potential, which was shown by the volume of work completed. Thank you to all our mentors. For those mentors and suppliers who have a web site, please feel free to check out their work and services.
