How personal is an online friendship and what can you expect of this friendship? Are you involved in the conversations of these new friends or are you content as an observer?

In the past few years I have friended and been friended by hundreds of Canadian artists, Organizations and Art Lovers. Much of the interaction is engine driven by Facebook (who also own Instagram), but LinkedIn (more of a business connection), Twitter and more also encourage you to make and share friends. It is obviously in their best interest for advertising purposes and profiling you and those you associate with, but where is the benefit for you the artist or Art Gallery?

These relationships seem thin at the beginning, so why are you requesting or being asked to be someone’s friend. Look forward to the end game. Look at these peoples following before accepting their friendship request. Are they just trying to see how may names they can get to follow them or is there something in common among the group you will be listed with?
