THE HISTORY OF SHOWING ART AT THE CNE

In 1879 the CNE employed members of the Group of Seven to help promote the TORONTO INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION - The CNE of its day. The shows were held in the Crystal Palace and were events catering to an International and worldly audience. The Crystal Palace has since disappeared, but the CNE continued to be the preeminent place to reveal new inventions, and of course some of the countries finest art each year. The CNE gave Canadian artists a place to exhibit their work and it presented one of the very few opportunities for visitors and artists to see foreign artworks without going abroad. The influence of these early exhibits for Canadian artists and collectors was tremendous.
