Mariam Qureshi

Canadian Artist Mariam Qureshi has explored imagination, emotion, sensuality and desire through different materials and mediums.

Self-taught, she began painting as a means of dealing with issues of injustice and poverty. During her childhood in Pakistan, she learned how to make paint out of found resources and continues to develop her passion for the arts.

In her early work in Montreal, Quebec, she created lustful images of the female body, highlighting sexuality and pleasure as major themes.

Mariam later experimented with abstraction and assemblage in the vein of “arte povera”, using found objects from her new home. She returned to making paintings and watercolors in the mid 2000s during her travels from the East to the West Coast of Canada.

The recipient of the Ambassador of the ARTs Award in Edmonton for 2017, Mariam Qureshi’s work falls outside the confines of any particular artistic movement or period, yet she remains a seminal figure and an important influence to artists she has met along her artistic journey. She has recently been invited to exhibit her work at an Art Fair at the Louvre in Paris by an Austrian Art Gallery. The art exhibition will take place last week of October, 2017.

Mariam Qureshi changed the course of what is often known as the modern art studio space by developing it into a public studio/gallery space, to offer glimpse of behind the scenes of curation of local art, creative lessons, music events, and featured art exhibitions. She exhibits works of many very talented artists from Edmonton, Alberta in company with her works at her public studio and has created a platform for artists which allows them to create without restrictions. Making the art exhibitions very intreguing and personable.

Mariam Qureshi continues to explore and paint beautiful oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings resonating only her reflective imagination and emotional attachment as her points of reference. Her ability to paint without reference pictures continues to enchant the audience into curiosty of where the next line or color will be drawn.
