Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and raised in Ontario, Gary’s journey from a young art enthusiast to a renowned artist and dedicated politician is nothing short of inspiring. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree from York University, where he studied under notable Canadian artists like Ron Bloore and Claude Breeze, Gary’s passion for painting and sculpture shines through in his work.

Gary’s career took an intriguing turn when he became a graphic artist at Southam Inc. while continuing to pursue his artistic dreams. His first solo exhibition in 1986 at Nancy Poole’s Studio in Yorkville marked the beginning of a prolific art career. Over the years, Gary’s artwork has been featured in numerous group shows and is held in both private and public collections.

Gary has made significant contributions to the arts community as a Toronto City Councillor. His roles included Chair of the Mayor’s Task Force on the Arts and Theatres and Vice Chair of the Toronto Arts Council. Through his leadership, Gary championed historic increases in arts funding, ensuring a thriving cultural landscape in Toronto. His dedication extended to numerous arts organizations, including Young People’s Theatre, Artscape, and the Gardiner Museum.
