The making of Come in Closer

As children, we playfully collapse in blankets of freshly fallen snow to create snowangels when given the chance. The physical impressions remain in the snow, but we rarely ponder how snow and ice could combine to create a winter spirit with grace, beauty and earthly origins.

This winter spirit seeks and invites the comfort of a warm soul. With arms resisting the collapse of her delicate wings, she invites us in. She provides a brief opportunity to accept her invitation despite her fragile, unpredictable and ever-shifting nature.

The snowangel emerges from a coarse snow drift, giving rise to the soft voluminous snow like wings and a cold tempered body. The contrasting textures and colours of snow and ice in “come in closer” is intended to draw the viewer closer to examine and feel the snow and ice like qualities of this sculpture. Frozen slush, powdered snow, abrasive drifts and ice crystals in thousands of shades and sizes all come into fruition.

“Come in closer” was born from a 100 lb boulder of Ice Blue marble, hand-quarried in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada.
