Victor Oriecuia was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, in 1974. Growing up in the pristine beauty and untainted natural splendours of Northwestern Ontario has deeply influenced Victor’s creative expression. Victor graduated in 1998 from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario with an Honours Bachelor in Biology and continued his Graduate studies from 1998 to 2001 in the field of plant physiology/biochemistry. Specializing in Biology for seven years has laid a foundation for his understanding in anatomy, form and function of the flora and fauna of Ontario and Canada. During his studies, Victor developed his sculpting ability through ice carving and culinary sculptures. Although the mediums are distinct from stone, the approach, creativity and passion remain constant. After years of assimilating the essential tools, materials and establishing a studio, Victor was then able to begin his stone sculpting ambitions. He is compelled to sculpt hard stones. Victor is driven to capture forms and volumes in the most unforgiving materials Canada has to offer. Perseverance, determination and immense focus allow Victor to overcome the mental and physical challenges of sculpting hard stone. He selects marble from Ontario and around Canada to showcase its’ beauty and diversity. Most are unaware of the marbles within Canada, yet they are among some of the finest in the world. His mission is not only to create original marble works, but to educate viewers on the history and uniqueness of Canadian marble. Victor is an observer of the finer details all around us. He finds beauty in the oddest places and brings them to life in stone. To feel his sculptures, is to understand the kinetic energy they possess. Elaborately contoured, polished marble feels like nothing else. Once the tactile and visual senses unite, only then can the viewer really appreciate the overall expression of his work. Victor currently resides in Kingston Ontario.
