International acclaimed Mi’kmaq artist, Dr. Leonard Paul, is a master watercolourist and intaglio printmaker, educated in Bachelor Fine Arts at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Leonard received the prestigious national award, the Governor General Medal of Canada, for his 40 years as a watercolourist. Mr. Paul is an Elected Member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Mr. Paul refers himself as a well-rounded thinker because although he is a status Mi’kmaq, he was born and raised in Halifax , so that he could stay away from the residential school. He often incorporates both his cultural heritage and Euro-Centric learning together for illustrating Mi’kmaq Legends in Storytelling. Last spring, Convocation 2024, his Alma Mater, Acadia University, Leonard Paul graduated with an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities. Mr. Paul, maintains he got all his art training from copying comic heroes from the local candy store! He could never get Charlie Brown’s head perfect like on the comic strip.
