Toner transfer from newsprint
Printmaking Series - Part 17 of 21

One of the interesting techniques possible with toner chalks is drawing on newsprint and
transferring the image unto several plates. After each transfer, there is enough of a ghost
image left on the paper so you can place the next color in registration to the others. A
number of plates can be produced this way easily and all in perfect register, depending on
the registration system you use. I have found that newsprint can differ in texture and
this can make a great deal of difference in how well the image transfers. You may have to
look for the best newsprint available for this technique, but the large sheets common to
North American printmakers works fine for me. Use a number of newsprint packing sheets to
get a smooth transition in the image. Fairly heavy pressure works best for this transfer
technique.

This method of transferring is just as practical for traditional lithography on both plate
and stone. The charcoal-like drawing is something not possible before in lithography as
the grease crayon does not leave a fine tint like the toner can. Even if you rub off some
of the toner image with your finger, the small amount left will print from properly
prepared plates.
