I am inspired by shapes, colours and textures. Even though my work can contain familiar articles my phantasms can start a stimulating kind of repartee that is not frequently found within a representational painting.
The darkness closes in on the light like the jaws of some great monster, the crow sits atop the broken birch with its metaphorical, cleft bough trying to warn the people of what is to come.
I was inspired by The Membertou 400 celebrations that took place in Nova Scotia a few years ago, the amazing people, colour and tradition was something I wanted to recreate. This caricature of an aboriginal brave, with his textured, "beaded" headdress and owl feathers takes me back to that amazing day!
As with, "The Brave" I was inspired to recreate the amazing beaded headdress of the Shaman. This textured headdress with its colourful "beads" identifies his position within the tribe.
