Sarah Doherty

Ms. Doherty's Fine Art practice focuses on traditional mediums on canvas and paper. Her paintings in particular have evolved from a scientifically precise and classically dramatic focus on underwater curiosities and fantastical scapes made from microbiological and galactic elements, to a more expressive, conceptual paint application around thoughtful uses of bold colour and animal imagery. Drawings as well, although predominantly in Graphite, have incorporated a Surrealistic overtone through the combination of realistic human and animal figures; the created forms carry curious conceptual considerations when viewed as a whole, putting visual context to concepts such as grief, trauma, mental illness, and the juxtaposition of those elements with their positive counterparts. Through all of her work, be it her personal practice or custom commissioned pieces, Ms. Doherty acknowledges the influence of Renaissance chiaroscuro, Realist detail, the Expressionist use of colour and application, and the Surrealist sense of humour.
