The making of Anna

The sculpture “Anna” was born of a 100 lb boulder of Venus marble, hand-quarried in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. I selected Venus marble for its’ striking veining and swirling masses of earthy greens. The veining in the stone compliments the curvatures of the female form, while providing warmth, depth, and a sense of universal vitality and spirit. Venus marble is extremely dense and difficult to carve. The stone warped my iron mallet, dulled my chisels, consumed my files, and required a mountain of sandpaper to achieve the desired texture. The process of sculpting marble is emotionally and physical challenging. My fingerprints disappeared as a result of intense sanding and my fingers bled due to the constant abrasion. It is a mental conquest to sand and polish marble by hand. It is tedious work, which requires commitment, perseverance, and intense focus.
