Born in 1952, and having been brought up in a poorer part of town but never, ever having to do without, I would sit for hours and draw, color, and do paint-by-numbers. I always dreamed of painting but never thought it was something that I would ever be able to do. I always thought it was way too expensive and out of my reach. As well, I never knew where or how to begin.
Fast forward to married life and children. My family and work and other things like carpentry, masonry, building, and gardening took precedence and I never got to think about painting but loved watching others paint. Fast forward again to my retirement. The urge to paint was so very strong. Someone heard that I wanted to take lessons and called me as they were putting on a watercolor course (still thought I couldn’t afford it) and she convinced me to jump in. I was hooked. I have since moved on to acrylics and oils as well.
A few years later, I met my mentor – Alma Campbell, who taught me so much about landscapes and I was in love. From there I moved onto seascapes, sunsets, sunrises, and then I found a passion in doing pet portraits and a few portraits.
For the past twelve years, painting has taken hold of my life and my soul. I can’t imagine being without it and hope I never have to be. I just hope that I bring joy to others by the work that I do. I know it fulfills me.
To those that have dreams of picking up a pencil, paintbrush, or pastels: go for it. You won’t regret it.
