When I was a child, I was told to stick to sports as I couldn’t stay in the lines when colouring. I thought I didn’t have a creative bone in my body which led me to a career in the corporate world conforming to others' expectations: I felt stifled, under pressure and unfulfilled. Mid-life, I took the plunge and switched careers. I discovered abstract art: it immediately brought me in touch with my creative side and the joy of ‘freedom to experiment’ with no defined outcomes.
I love exploring different mediums and particularly enjoy the versatility of acrylic paints with other mixed media such as cheesecloth, rock and pumice stone. The integration of different materials and the development of the painting itself is experimental, yet purposeful.
I do not begin with a defined outcome or goal. Each piece tells me what it needs to grow and speaks to me again when it is complete. I’ve found that some of my most memorable pieces come from making mistakes – it allows me to step aside and take a different perspective and grow in the process. As an artist, I work through those circumstances as one works through the unpredictability of life.
Today, Jenny creates colourful abstract paintings working in acrylic, watercolors, ink and mixed media. Each piece captures a ‘moment in time’ that is an expression of who she is through her composition of color and textures. Her sense of curiosity drives her to explore and evolve her skills. For over 16 years, she has exhibited in group and solo shows in Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan. Her works have been sold to collectors in the US and Canada. Today you can find her creating colourful paintings in her studio in Summerland B.C. In the words of one of her clients, “It allows me to imagine things. It almost feels like I am peeking into someone's dream!”
