Working in encaustics, I create visual impressions of my ‘happy places’ in luminous, colourful art that allow you to build on the imagery and complete the story.
I begin in nature, quiet down, breath deeply, meditate. Whether I reflect on peaceful harmony, a questioning reality or embrace the power and strength encountered, my response is a general lifting of spirit that feeds a deep-rooted joyful attitude of heart.
My landscapes are expressions of these feelings presented in ambiguity of space. The abundance of beauty and energy might be expressed in an explosion of vibrant colour and the quite rhythm of movement in nature appear in a simple seascape or skies with diaphanous layers.
I lay down my “map” through incising in layers of wax. This helps inform the piece as I build many more ethereal layers concealing or revealing as the story comes to life. Detail and texture are deep under smoother surface layers. I may further inform smaller pieces with ink drawing
I continue to play and create unique pieces where you'll find the use of foraged items, image transfers, Japanese paper and use of pastels in my art. Marrying encaustic with rustic upcycled materials like reclaimed barn wood is a great fit. I often finish pieces with handmade barn wood frames or create 3D encaustic “happy homes” using upcycled barn wood.
I built on my formal education and 15+ year career in graphic design, and completed a variety of classes at OCAD U, York U, in fine arts. I continue to play and learn informally.
When I am not in my Thornhill, Ontario studio you will find me leading Creative Adventures Events and working with the Artists’ Network directing their outdoor ArtWalks.
In “Community” you can find a picture of the human narrative in nature – aligned in our design to live in relationship – trees supported through a system of deep roots, connections and regrowth.
