In September of 2009, I was thrilled to be able to observe Shuswap First Nation, Professional, Fancy Dancer, Ernie Philip, at the Okanagan College, Aboriginal Youth Exhibition and Pow Wow event, at the Kelowna campus.
If one is in Oliver, British Columbia, and you happen to look way up at the massive cliff of McIntyre Bluff the first thing you notice is the well known rock formation of “The Chief.†This unique rock formation viewed from a distance continues to be proclaimed a spiritual natural wonder in the South Okanagan. Far below, lies the Okanagan River, and this particular section of the river near Oliver as seen in this painting, has been restored to a likeness of the original meandering river.
I have observed Ernie at Okanagan College Aboriginal Exhibition Pow Wows, Cache Creek Elementary School, and most recently the Sqwlax Pow Wow. As an artist, it is exciting to be able to paint Ernie in his many roles as a First Nation Fancy dancer, a proud elder, and an individual that “unites people.â€
It is my deep desire in this painting to share the spiritual beauty of Okanagan Lake, and the sense of mystery that surrounds Rattlesnake Island. I have always been captivated with this special view from the bluffs on the west side of the lake south of Peachland, looking north east at the small island.
A landscape from the top of the Okanagan connector of the incredible Okanagan Lake.
Painting of twin skaters with long auburn hair and a lone hockey puck. Dreamy in Canada.
Painting of a child making snow angel on frozen lake outdoors in Canada, Winter.
Representational painting of people enjoying skating on an outdoor pond in Canada in Winter.
A client commissioned a painting of Parlee Beach, a renowned family friendly wonderland of sand and sea in New Brunswick, Canada. After visiting and enjoying the place, I created this painting - showing a child not really wanting to leave the wonder of this place.
