*Reproduction Prints for sale only* I joke that this painting is a kind of self-portrait, as at times in my life, I can relate to this bear in getting in over my head and then just furiously treading water to stay afloat. However, the bigger issue with this painting and the bigger inspiration, is the condition of the disappearing polar ice caps, forcing polar bears to swim great lengths in order to find land. In 'Head above Water' I tried to convey the struggle and uncertainty of this particular bears plight. Only the viewer can determine whether she makes it to shore or not. Early evening painting at Mackenzie Beach near Tofino. Spectacular rock stacks create a sheltered gateway to the Pacific Ocean. This region south of Tofino is within Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island B.C., and while the rugged coastline is beautiful it is also wild, hazardous, and famous for its magnificent storm watching. Marine, intertidal species and mammals are abundant. Each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean. The District of Tofino, Surfrider Pacific Rim and Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks partnership fosters beach stewardship; collect litter, marine debris, use water refill stations, single-use items are banned.
